Roughly 5 weeks ago, on January 7, 2025, wildfires traveling on hurricane-force winds tore through two parts of Los Angeles. One of those was called the Eaton Fire, and it absolutely devastated the town of Altadena. The fire burned for roughly 24 days, with more than 9,000 structures getting destroyed, thousands more damaged, and most tragically, at least 17 people losing their lives.
I lost the unit I was living in due to toxins carried by the smoke blanketing the building, with entire blocks nearby getting wiped out. The clothes, papers and few personal items I took with me when I evacuated the night of the fire became all I had left.
However like the town itself, I'm determined to not only rebuild, but create a better future for myself. As an artist, one item that brings me some joy and comfort is one of the items I brought with me when evacuating was the notebook containing the last several chapters of the final book in my pirate trilogy titled Pirates & Scallywags.
Despite losing my living situation and most of my personal belongings, I look ahead to the future, and all the amazing stories I plan to write!
Here are some photos of the fire I personally took, as well the the devastated area around my neighborhood afterwards:
